The Lower Rhine is an age-old cultural gem in which 500,000 year-old archaeological discoveries lead back into the old stone-age; a time before the Neanderthals. It is no wonder then that a region with such a long and rich history has so many sights to offer.  Manors and castles can be found in number and variation not to be seen anywhere else in Europe — from medieval timber-framed moated castles through to brick baroque manors in Holland, right up to neogothic castles.  Roamn ruins can also be found at the archaeological park in Xanten (Germany) on the banks of the river Rhine.   Discover the remains of the ancient city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, previously one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire.
