Markets in Maastricht

Experiencing open-air markets is another one of the pleasures in the Netherlands, and the market in Maastricht is no exception. These fun and colorful markets, some providing music from local bands, feature vendors selling everything from produce and fish to local specialties and antiques. The “Markt” Square is the place to be on Wednesday from 8.00am to 1.00pm.  Located near the main train station, this market is home to vendors hawking fresh seasonal produce, baked goods, flowers, fabric, and clothes. On Fridays, at the fish stands at the Boschstraat market fresh seasonal catches are readily available.

Take Time to Browse

The antiques and flea market on Saturdays from 8 AM to 3 PM at Stationstraat is the place to pick up that “one of a kind” item.  On Thursdays the browsing shifts to the organic food market at Wycker Burgstraat where visitors are treated to with flowers, fruits, vegetables, and cheeses. Not to be missed is a stall selling a favorite Dutch “delicatessen”: fresh made giant stroopwafels!

A Shopping Destination

Maastricht is undoubtedly a popular shopping destination in the Netherlands. In addition to boasting great markets, Maastricht is a historic and cultural city with numerous cafes, art galleries, trendy boutiques and antique shops.  The Binnenstad and Wyck districts provide some of the major shopping areas. Maastricht hosts the European Fine Art Fair in March and a large and festive Christmas market in December. Visitors travelling to other cities have many travel options, including train, bus, motorways, and boat.
