From 1931 until 1990, the Van Nelle Design Factory (Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek) was a factory used to produce coffee, tea and tobacco. When it opened its doors in 1931, it was one of the most innovative and modern buildings of its time.
Designers from all over the world wanted to see this unique structure, which is mainly made up out of glass and steel. The concepts of light, air and space played a crucial role in the design by architects Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. The Van Nelle Design Factory had an ambience of spaciousness and purity, which was unique to industrial complexes. It became a modern architectonic milestone.
