The Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam was initiated in 1995 by Valery Gergiev, the Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He had the ambitious idea to create a musical event that would last for several days. One year later, the Philharmonic presented the Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival 1996, which became one of the most important classical music events in the Netherlands.
Over thirty concerts are given in different venues throughout Rotterdam in just nine days. What started as a symphonic concert series with a theme, quickly grew into a large-scale music festival with contemporary music and opera productions. The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra's repertoire not only covers all periods in music history, but music genres beyond the realm of the traditional as well. This makes it easy to play with different themes every year.
De Doelen in Rotterdam is home to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. This ensemble has evolved into one of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands. The Gergiev Festival is a great opportunity to enjoy the symphonic repertoire of many orchestras and the cultural life in Rotterdam.
