Artis Zoo

Artis Zoo was founded in 1838. It has, of course, changed considerably since then. However, the winding paths, majestic trees and the monumental historical buildings still give Artis a special, 19th century atmosphere. There are more than 8000 animals in the zoo, as well as two museums, the Zoological Museum and the Geological Museum, a very sophisticated Planetarium, a children's farm and a magnificent, recently renewed Aquarium. The restaurant 'de twee cheetahs' (Two Cheetahs) overlooks the African Savannah.

ARTIS = MUSEUM OF LIFE
Artis is first and foremost a zoo with magnificent animals. For example, you will find desert antelopes, llamas and giraffes. You can also see the zookeepers feeding the animals at specific times. If you walk further through the zoo you can visit the revamped Aquarium. Here you see a real coral reef and a tidal forest, as well as a genuine Amsterdam Canal!

Are you interested in new experiences and learning something on your day out? In the Geological Museum, the history of life on earth is told by means of various activities. In the Zoological Museum, you can visit special exhibitions. Artis Planetarium offers you an exciting journey through space and time. Lean back in your chair and see the stars and planets go by. A landing on Mars? A total eclipse? A visit to faraway star systems? You can experience it all in the Planetarium!

GUIDED TOURS
Besides these attractions, there are loads of other things to do at Artis. For instance, every Sunday you can go on a special guided tour of the park, in which the guide will tell you funny anecdotes and special facts about the thousands of animals that live here. Groups can book a guided tour and take a look behind the scenes of the attractions.
