Put on your swimsuit and pack your inflatable boat, windshield and cold drinks. You no longer have to travel down to the coast on fine days. Amsterdam now has its very own sandy beach on the shores of IJburg Lake on IJburg Island.
BEACH PAVILION
The beach, which measures 250 meters by 40 meters, is situated on Haveneiland Oost. IJburg aan Zee has a pleasant beach pavilion, Blijburg aan Zee. It is even possible to take sailing lessons. Facilities include lavatories and ample parking. Take bus 326 from Amsterdam Central Station and you will be on the beach in twenty minutes.
IJBURG
At the end of this year this beach will have to go again. It will have to make way for a new residential area. In the near future IJburg will, however, get a permanent beach on Strandeiland. Construction of the brand new residential estate in IJmeer is in full swing. A total of 12,000 houses will be built on the IJburg islands. They will house some 45,000 people. |
