Meet the Dutch Masters

Dutch Masters changed the art of painting forever with their brush strokes. Dutch painters such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen and Frans Hals, developed a worldwide reputation in the 16th and 17th centuries. But Dutch Masters were artistic pioneers in the centuries before and after the “golden era of painting” as well.

Everybody knows a Dutch masterpiece

Masterpieces with which you are sure to be familiar are Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch,” Vermeer’s “Girl with the Pearl Earring,” and Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”. But the household scenes depicted by Jan Steen, the schuttersstukken (civic guard group paintings) by Frans Hals, the fantasy creatures of Jheronimus Bosch and Mondriaan’s straight lines are also pioneering masterpieces. And what do all of the works by the Old Masters have in common? They were all painted by Dutch artists and you can view them in Dutch museums.
