Five universities are situated within a 50-kilometre radius. ’s-Hertogenbosch is a fortified city. The first walls were built after the city was granted city charter in 1185. Over time, the walls had to be moved and expanded due to the city’s growth. The total length eventually amounted to 6.5 kilometres. The fortifications have always been important to ’s-Hertogenbosch as they protected its inhabitants against both their enemies and high water.
