Friesland, the beautiful province teeming with lakes, verdant pastures and centuries-old towns and cities is an ideal place for a bicycle tour. It’s 6 days of pure cycling enjoyment, and if you wish, you can also reserve an extra seventh day to visit the breathtaking Wadden Islands off the Frisian coast.
Off we go…
After arriving in Heerenveen, the oldest peat canal village in Holland (so called because it grew around the crossing of two canals used for the transport of peat) and close to the beautiful Oranjewoud, the tour begins on the second day, running through Lemmer and to Oudermirdum. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll cycle on to Stavoren, the oldest town in Friesland, from where you will then move on to visit beautiful towns and villages like Hindelopen, Workum and Makkum, on your way to the port town of Harlingen.
Wonderful Wadden Islands
After Harlingen, the tour continues along the Frisian Wadden coast, a landscape comprised of lovely dikes and uniquely Frisian landscape features such as kwelders and terpen. If you enjoy sweeping views and unique plants and wildlife, you’ll be delighted! You’ll then cross the famous “bridge of Bartlehiem”, well-known thanks to the Frisian Elfstedentocht skating tour, and conclude this day of cycling in the Frisian capital of Leeuwarden.
After a final, relaxed trip that will take you through various water sports-centred cities, like Grouw and Akkrum, you’ll have arrived back where you started: in Heerenveen.
Tip! Extend this bike holiday with a trip across the water to one of the Wadden Islands of Vlieland or Terschelling!
