Have you ever seen the combination of a windmill and a brewery? Seated in front of the Molen de Gooyer in Amsterdam is the Brouwerij ‘t IJ. The brew company was founded in a small building by the river IJ back in 1983. In 1985, the brewery was moved into the Funenmolen building, a disused public bathhouse alongside the Molen de Gooyer where it remains today. The IJ comes from the river's name, and the brewery brews all its wares locally.

Molen de Gooyer

The former flour mill is one of the six original windmills still standing in Amsterdam, and of these six, De Gooyer is the closest to the historic center of the city. It was built in 1725 and moved in 1814 to continue to catch the wind (new buildings had blocked it). Currently sharing its property with the Brouwerij ‘t IJ, the windmill attracts many customers. Molen de Gooyer is regarded as the highest wooden windmill in the Holland, making these two establishments easy to spot on your leisurely tour of Amsterdam.

Have a drink, catch the wind

The brewery is a great place to stop for a snack and a beer, but seats are limited, so arrive early if you want a table to comfortably enjoy your brew. The brewery tasting bar is open from 2-8 pm daily, when you can get a small range of drinks from the house brew (and lemonade as well). There is also a selection of food such as boiled eggs, salami, and Trappist cheeses. Tours of the brewery are available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (come early—ticket sales begin at 2pm). The price includes one beer. The mill is owned by the city and cannot be visited, maybe that’s a good thing with all that quality beer on hand.
