11 Fountains

Spanish artist Jaume Plensa’s fountain was inspired by youngsters he met in Friesland’s capital Leeuwarden. The artwork – titled ‘Love’ – features the heads of a boy and a girl, each seven meters tall, with their eyes closed, as if dreaming about the future. The fountain’s ‘water’ is actually a two-meter cloud of mist enveloping their heads – the artist’s tribute to the delicate fog that rises over Frisian fields early in the morning. Visitors are free to wander in the encircling fog. The work is part of the 11Fountains project, in which a fountain was designed for each of the 11 cities in Friesland. ‘Love’ is the centerpiece of a complete redevelopment of the area in front of Leeuwarden’s railway station.
