You can cycle fron Leiden to the beach in less than an hour. Katwijk is the nearest beach resort and is well-known for its clean and child-friendly beach. Katwijk’s beach is Leiden’s backyard; it is the perfect place to cool down on a hot summer day and be energised by a brisk autumn walk.

Start at the back of Leiden Central Station and ride past the LUMC hospital and the car park towards the roundabout. Turn right into Albinusdreef and then left into Wassenaarseweg. At the end, cross the motorway via Verlengde Wassenaarseweg and then turn left towards the McDonald’s restaurant. Turn right at the traffic lights, which is the start of a itinerary straight on towards Katwijk.
After several kilometres parallel to Ingenieur G. Tjalmaweg, turn left at the traffic lights and then immediately right at the roundabout into Kooltuinweg. Follow the bicycle path, which switches to Cantineweg. Turn left into Nachtegaallaan, which switches to Wethouder D. Ouwehandstraat and Schelpendam. Zuidstraat will take you to the boulevard and beach in a straight line.
Katwijk is a wonderful seaside resort that draws young people and old towards sun, sea and a nice tan. If you would prefer to add a sportive challenge to your itinerary, continue south through Meijendel’s beautiful dune region or north towards seaside resort Noordwijk.
