De Doelen in Rotterdam is both a congress hall and a concert hall. The venue hosts over 1,200 events a year, including 600 concerts ranging from classical to world music and jazz. The concert hall’s fame reaches beyond the borders of Holland, partly because it is home to one of the best symphonic orchestras in Europe: the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
- De Doelen boasts Holland’s biggest concert hall.
- Excellent architecture and acoustics.
- Over 1200 events annually.
De Doelen building
The Great Hall is not just the biggest hall in De Doelen; it is also the biggest concert hall in Holland. Its architecture and acoustics are widely praised. The Rotterdam music theatre has three other halls as well and draws nearly 500,000 visitors a year.
The name De Doelen is derived from a group of city musicians from the 17th century. The site was put into use as a cultural and entertainment venue in 1844. The theatre was destroyed during the 1940 bombing raids. After the war it was rebuilt; it has since been renovated and extended several times.
