Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
The Gemeentemuseum in The Hague boasts the world’s biggest Mondrian collection. The spectacular permanent exhibition Mondriaan & De Stijl shows how Mondrian evolved from a talented landscape painter into a pioneer in abstract art. You can see every stage of Mondrian’s voyage of discovery through art at the Gemeentemuseum: from verdant, realist landscapes through brightly colored windmills to his world-famous abstract compositions with red, yellow and blue shapes.
Victory Boogie Woogie
The Gemeentemuseum also displays Mondrian’s most famous work: his uncompleted masterpiece Victory Boogie Woogie. Mondrian painted it while living in New York. Amid the skyscrapers of this metropolis, he became fascinated with the rhythm of the boogie woogie. He wanted to visualize the energy of this new music on canvas. Mondrian worked on the diamond-shaped painting until a few days before he died, creating 574 colored squares with paint, tape, and cardboard. Experience the impact of this ultimate apex in Mondrian’s career for yourself.
