Utrecht is a city of beautiful canals, bustling shopping streets and plenty of cultural highlights – and a wonderful place to visit in summer. Situated in Holland’s ‘green heart’, it has everything for a great holiday.
- addle a canoe along the wharf cellars in Utrecht.
- Visit the 400-year-old textile market on Saturday morning.
- Enjoy a music show at TivoliVredenburg.
Utrecht’s three highlights this summer are:
1. Explore Utrecht by canoe or water bike
Paddle along the Oudegracht with its beautiful wharf cellars. Discover the city’s many monuments from the water or leave the city and row to the lovely natural park of Rhijnauwen. Don’t forget to stop for a meal or a beer at one of the cafes or restaurants you are bound to pass.
2. Market shopping
Going for an unhurried market stroll is one of the most enjoyable holiday activities. Utrecht has a wonderful flower market on the Oudegracht on Saturday for those who love gardening. The Breedstraat and Begijnhof host the biggest and oldest (400 years) textile market in Holland on Saturday morning. And the regional market on the Twijnstraat every first Sunday of the month presents the best regional dishes and produce every time.
Regional market: From April, every 1st Sunday of the month on Twijnstraat
Flower market: Saturday on Oudegracht and Janskerkhof
Lapjesmarkt textile market: Saturday morning from 8:00 to 13:00 on Breedstraat and Begijnhof.
3. Visit TivoliVredenburg
This new music centre opened its doors in the spring of 2014 and is the biggest of its kind in Holland. It boasts five big concert halls for different music genres, from classical to jazz and from pop to cross-over. It has a great grand café and a bustling jazz club and also hosts interesting workshops.
