Water sports in Friesland
Friesland has everything water sports enthusiasts dream of. With its almost endless numbers of lakes, canals, ditches and waterways, Friesland has the largest chain of connected inland lakes in Europe. No wonder the province attracts thousands of tourists every year.
- Friesland is by far the number one province for water sports.
- Friesland is at its most beautiful from the water.
- Come to one of the many events on or along the water.
Water Events
Friesland counts many events that are organized on and around the water. The skûtsjesilen championships is an annual event on the Frisian Lakes in which Frisian barges compete against each other. Sneekweek is another popular summer event and the largest inland water event in Europe. You must try Fierljeppen, which is Frisian for pole jumping (across a body of water). In short, water fanatics have the time of their life in Friesland.
Sailing in Friesland
Friesland is the perfect sailing province. You can sail from village to village on the interconnected lakes, or go for the big water and cross the Wadden Sea to one of the Wadden Islands. Some like to spend time in the natural surroundings of the Wadden Sea and Lauwersmeer National Park. Others prefer to sail from one place to another in Friesland. The local tourist information office (VVV) can provide you with the best routes and package deals, whether you’re into sailing, (kite-) surfing or wakeboarding.
Are you visiting Friesland with your own boat? Friesland is easy to reach via the Wadden Sea and IJsselmeer. There are also several boat routes to Friesland from Belgium and Germany. And of course you can rent a boat in Friesland. Boat rental companies are to be found in virtually every town by the water. From barges and small sailboats for a day on the water to large yachts if you want to go on a boating holiday.
Water sports in Friesland
In addition to sailing, there are several other water sports you can enjoy in Friesland. There is a great surfing spot in Makkum, for instance, and a fantastic kite surfing spot on the IJsselmeer near Workum. You can rent sup boards in several places to explore a beautiful route through one of the province’s many nature reserves. A barge itinerary is available in Southwest Friesland. This route takes you through channels (which are not accessible to large yachts) along picturesque sites and villages, centuries old towns and beautiful forests.
