Helene Kröller-Müller and De Stijl
The wealthy Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939) founded the Kröller-Müller Museum. She was one of the first European women to establish a sizable and important art collection. In addition to works by top artists like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Claude Monet, she also collected work by De Stijl artists. As a result, the Kröller-Müller Museum boasts a huge collection of works by Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Gerrit Rietveld, and Bart van der Leck.
Rietveld Pavilion
In the mid-fifties, Gerrit Rietveld designed a pavilion to exhibit smaller sculptures for the International Sculpture Exhibition in Arnhem. The pavilion was disassembled after the exhibition. Fortunately, it was rebuilt in the sculpture garden at the Kröller-Müller Museum in 1964. This was also when its name was changed from Sonsbeek Pavilion to Rietveld Pavilion.
