National Landscape Het Groene Woud
Discover Het Groene Woud
The Groene Woud National Landscape offers diverse landscapes, and a peek into what the province of North Brabant must have looked like in ancient times. Woods, heathland, streams, grasslands, marshes, sand dunes, fields, farms and hamlets are flanked by Eindhoven, Tilburg and Den Bosch. It's a wild area where you can still experience nature without any human intervention. After a day outside, you can enjoy the warm atmosphere of Brabant in one of the villages of Sint-Oedenrode, Germonde or Oisterwijk.
Cycling or hiking
An extensive network of walking and biking paths allows for both short and long trips through the Groene Woud (the Green Woods). You will immediately notice that many poplar forests grow in the area. These forests were planted in the early 19th century when this type of wood was used for the very profitable clog industry.
Another striking sight in the Groene Woud are the "bolle akkers" (round fields). In order to transform the sands into fruitful fields, they were fertilized with turf centuries ago. The farmers in this area have continued this technique for many years and thus slowly increased the ground level of these plots.
Finally, the area has a Roman Catholic past. Besides farms, mills and houses, you will also find many monasteries, churches and chapels. These cultural monuments are absolutely worth visiting on your tour.
