Zuylen Castle

Zuylen Castle was built around 1520 on top of medieval ruins in the small town of Oud Zuilen, near Utrecht. It was originally surrounded on all sides by water, and only accessible via a bridge. Ultimately, a park was built in English landscape style and a summer house was built in the woods. The last renovations made to Zuylen Castle took place in 1752 when the castle was rebuilt as a country manor on the Vecht River. If you visit the castle today, you’ll almost feel as if you’ve landed in the 18th century.

Van Tuyll family

The castle currently houses the Zuylen collection, a group of objects that provide a good overview of the three centuries that the Van Tuyll van Serooskerken family lived in the castle. The collection consists of porcelain, glassware, paintings, furnishings and tapestries. Several of the rooms have been decorated to resemble what they would have looked like during the time the famous writer Belle van Zuylen lived in the castle. Part of the garden, with its famous serpentine wall, has been built in English landscape style.

The Zuylen castle gardens are perfect for relaxing strolls, and in the summer, you can take tours of the garden with a guide who can tell you more about the style elements from the different centuries. Gardening days are scheduled regularly, during which volunteers help out with the maintenance of the gardens.
