Renesse and its beaches
First-class island position: Renesse
Renesse can be found on Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland's largest island. Even the journey to the swimming area is spectacular: if you're coming from the south, you'll pass the Zeeland Bridge and the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier, and if you're coming from the north, you'll pass the Brouwersdam. The island itself is perfectly suited to long cycling tours and cultural trips into the historic cities of Zierikzee and Brouwershaven. You'll find the typical Dutch gabled houses, river ports, ramparts and white drawbridges here - ideal for shopping and sightseeing. The pretty area of Burgh-Haamstede, surrounded by several holiday parks, is a little more tranquil.
The beaches of Renesse
Renesse has already received several international Blue Flag awards for its clean beaches and the outstanding quality of its water. Another reason why the clean white beaches of Renesse attract a wide audience is the diversity of the beaches. Renesse offers nature, nudist, family and activity beaches for surfers and waterskiers. There's something for everyone on the coast of Renesse. Even dog owners will be happy, as dogs are allowed on the beach here all year around (on a lead, from 1 May to 1 October, between 10 am and 7 pm). Ideal for a long walk with your four-legged friend.
Renesse: something for everyone!
Young people come to Renesse for the beach clubs and nightclubs, watersports enthusiasts for the good sailing and surfing territory, divers for the top underwater conditions and the diving centre, families for the child-friendly beaches - there are countless reasons for discovering Renesse! The resort simply has very much to offer. In summer, there are night markets which are open until midnight. The local surroundings are also good for lovely cycling and walking tours, such as Castle Moermond. You'll never get bored in Renesse. And if you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet, you can go for a wander through the Westerschouwen woodland at Burgh-Haamstede, where the wood directly borders the dunes and beach. Great for children: there is a viewing tower and Shetland ponies as 'lawnmowers'.
Destination Zeeland
Zeeland is the region of the Netherlands with the most hours of sunlight and - according to many people - the loveliest beaches. However, another attraction of Zeeland is its magnificent medieval towns, such as Middelburg and idyllic ports such as Breskens. And of course, you'll find marvellous resorts in Zeeland, such as Cadzand and Vlissingen, where you can take a break on the 120 m long bench. You can also enjoy some fantastic food in Zeeland. Have you tried the Oosterschelde lobsters yet?
Sightseeing and activities in Zeeland
The highlights of Zeeland include the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier, only 15 km away from Renesse. This gigantic structure, which lies between the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, has also been described as the 'eighth wonder of the world'. You can find out more about the storm surge barrier, seals and the forces of nature of the North Sea in Deltapark Neeltje Jans, established on an island in the middle of the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier. You can even enter the gigantic structure there and see it from the inside! On the other side of Schouwen-Duiveland, in the immediate vicinity of Renesse, waits the Brouwersdam, which is one of Zeeland's top five watersports areas. The 'Watersplash' - a steep flume just begging for acrobatic stunts - promises hours of fun. Incidentally: the surrounding Lake Grevelingen is the largest salt water lake in Western Europe, with an area of 14,000 ha.
Staying in Renesse
You'll want to stay for longer where the beaches are so lovely and there's such a variety of things to do. In Renesse, you can find a wide variety of accommodation types; from campsites, to holiday parks with comfortable holiday houses, to luxurious hotels. You can even stay on a country estate with a castle. If you'd rather swim in a pool than the sea, you'll also find some hotels in Renesse with swimming pools.
