Bicycle tour through De Beemster

If you want to get out of the city for a day, hire a bicycle. Amsterdam is surrounded by beautiful natural areas that are easily explored by bicycle. We recommend De Beemster tour, for instance.

  • Cycle past green meadows and flower-bulb fields.
  • Enjoy the typically Dutch landscape with its windmills and farms.
  • Stop to enjoy a bite or a drink in one of the beautiful old-fashioned Dutch villages.

Grassland birds

This itinerary takes you through one of the oldest and most beautiful ‘droogmakerijen’ (lakes turned into dry land) in Noord-Holland: De Beemster. You will ride through grasslands and flower bulb fields, past windmills and beautiful old farms. And along the way you will have an opportunity to see many special grassland birds like the black-tailed godwit and common redshank.

Stelling van Amsterdam

This itinerary also takes you along five fortresses that are part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the old city fortifications. At the edge of the peat marshes you will see picturesque old Dutch villages like De Rijp and Grootschermer. Why not stop for lunch or a drink? Contact the tourist office (VVV) for the bicycle itinerary. Of course you can also take the ferry that stops behind Amsterdam Central Station, get on the bicycle and find your own way. If you follow the signs pointing to Purmerend, you will get to De Beemster quite easily.
