Experience winter in Amsterdam

Enjoy the Christmas markets, ice-skating rinks, Christmas concerts and welcoming atmosphere in Amsterdam. Visiting Amsterdam in the Christmas period is definitely something to put on your to-do list.

  • Dozens of museums await you!
  • The colder the weather, the warmer the welcome.
  • Explore the food halls in Amsterdam.
When temperatures start dropping, Amsterdam natives know just what it takes to make their lives extra warm and cosy. During winter months, and particularly around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the city’s atmosphere is better than ever. The streets are decorated with Christmas lights, there are little ice-skating rinks on Museumplein and Leidseplein squares and there are, of course, plenty of welcoming pubs and restaurants. Well worth a visit!

Welcoming bustle

By day, you can go for a walk past the wonderful historical buildings, get your dose of culture at the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum or do Christmas shopping at one of the countless Christmas markets or the eclectic negen straatjes area (‘nine little streets’). There is plenty to do at night, too. There are many classical Christmas concerts at the Royal Concertgebouw, Paradiso and several churches, or you could visit the royal cinema Pathé Tuschinski.

Amsterdam Light Festival

In other words: Amsterdam (and also in the rest of Winter Wonderland Netherlands) offers plenty of winter entertainment, with Christmas markets, christmas concerts and lots of festive lights in the shopping streets. And don’t forget the Amsterdam Light Festival with its extraordinary light installations that literally light up the canals and inner city. Amsterdam in winter is definitely something you should experience, particularly around the holidays!

Stroll through the food halls

A collection of exciting food concepts have found a perfect accommodation in an old tram depot (tramremise) in Amsterdam. Here, you will find great restaurants and countless local entrepreneurs offering their original food and drinks, which you can buy and take with you to enjoy elsewhere or – and we definitely recommend this – enjoy them on site. De Hallen Amsterdam also boasts a hotel, cinema, library and great shops. You will find this excellent place on Bellamyplein square in Amsterdam Oud-West.
