The Hermitage

Currently, the majority of the Hermitage Amsterdam collection is closed.

The art collection of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg had become so extensive that the museum decided to put a range of works on display in branches. The biggest of these can be found in Amsterdam. The Russian art was initially on display in a small building but the Hermitage in the Amstelhof opened its doors in 2009. Just a year later, the museum welcomed its one millionth visitor. The Hermitage is one of the top attractions in Amsterdam.

History of the Amstelhof

You cannot imagine it when you walk through the building, but the Amstelhof was a nursing home for the elderly for more than three centuries. Because it did not comply with the modern requirements for a nursing home, the manager ceded the building to the city of Amsterdam. The last inhabitants left in 2007 and the building was thoroughly renovated and converted in the 2 years that followed. It is now one of the most popular museums in the city.

Accessibility and parking at the Hermitage

The Hermitage is easy to reach from Amsterdam Central Station by tram and metro. If you are driving, you can park your car in the paid underground car park at Waterlooplein square.

Near the Hermitage

If you are at the Hermitage, a short walk will take you to the Stopera opera house, Theater Carré, Waterlooplein square or Joods Historisch Museum (Jewish History Museum).
