The canal district: a World Heritage Site

The museum opened in 2011 after the Amsterdam canal district was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building housing the museum is itself a well-known place that was once home to many famous people.

Famous inhabitants

It is located on the Herengracht 386 and has housed rich bankers and tradesmen since 1663. Jan Willink was the most famous of these. During the War of Independence, Willink supported the Americans by donating 30 million dollars – an incredible amount at that time. Het Grachtenmuseum is well worth a visit.
