The National Maritime Museum

The Scheepvaartmuseum shows how much of our wealth and culture we owe to the sea. The museum can be found in one of Amsterdam’s biggest Golden Age buildings and owns an impressive maritime collection that includes naval maps, paintings, navigation instruments, and model ships. The themed object exhibitions, such as Atlases and Navigation Instruments, display the best from the world’s biggest maritime collections. VR Journey 'Dare to Discover'

Step aboard the VOC ship the Amsterdam and travel back in time to the Golden Age. This virtual journey takes you on a flight over the historic harbor of 17th century Amsterdam. Experience how the harbor flourishes and expands rapidly. See how new land emerges from the sea and merchants from different countries bring in and ship out their goods.

The VR tour starts every 15 minutes and is suitable for children of 8 years and up.

Het Scheepvaartmuseum is within walking distance from Amsterdam Central Station. Everyone, young and old, is welcome to enjoy the building and the exhibitions. The restaurant, library and museum shop are freely accessible from the spectacular covered courtyard.
