Construction of Amsterdam Central Station

Did you know that Amsterdam’s railway station is built on wooden piles? To construct the station, an island was created using sand dug up for the North Sea Canal. The building has been a state monument since the nineteen seventies, which means that its appearance cannot be altered without formal permission. It underwent a large-scale conversion, however. The hall off the main entrance was fully renovated. All tracks are now covered and space was created for restaurants, cafes and shops. It is how a beautiful landmark on the outside and a great meeting place with every amenity on the inside.

Station Square and its surroundings

Station Square lies in front of the railway station. This is where you will find the metro entrance, tram stops and several bus stops. Tram line 2, which according to the experts is one of the world’s most beautiful tram routes, is highly recommended. It will take you to city highlights like Dam Square, the canal district, the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Vondelpark.

There is plenty to see near the railway station, too. Take a ferry across the water to Amsterdam Noord to visit the EYE Amsterdam film museum, for instance. The modern building offers a magnificent view of the IJ river and Amsterdam’s skyline. Science Center NEMO and Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum) are within walking distance as well. Amsterdam Central Station is near Dam Square and the canal district as well.
