Picturesque art museum in Arnhem

Just a few minutes’ walk from Arnhem’s central train station and enjoying a panoramic view of the meandering River Rhine from its sloping grounds, Museum Arnhem is housed in an attractive, 19th century building surrounded by lush green gardens. As well as hosting frequent temporary exhibitions, it boasts an impressive permanent collection of 20th century art, contemporary jewellery and international design, with a special focus on modern realism, non-Western art and the work of female artists.

Indoors meets outdoors

Jan Mankes, Jan Sluyters, Wim Schumacher, Klaas Gubbels, Pyke Koch and Fiona Tan are amongst the artists whose work is represented in the museum’s elegant gallery spaces. Outdoors, visitors can explore contemporary sculpture in the beautiful gardens, or simply take in these works from the comfort of the light-filled café located in a newly built wing of the museum. In late 2017, work begins on an ambitious renovation and expansion project by Holland’s most famous architects Benthem Crouwel, which will enhance the original features of the 1873 design, while improving the museum experience and its relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Opening times

Museum Arnhem is currently engaged in renovation and expansion works but can be visited in various locations. Check out www.museumarnhem.nll for more information. The revamped museum is expected to open its doors early in 2022.

Around Arnhem

As the capital of Gelderland, the largest province in Holland, Arnhem is a culturally and historically significant city with a lot to offer. The Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’ tells the story of the Battle of Arnhem and its significance to the outcome of WWII, while the conservation-focused Burgers’ Zoo is a popular draw for animal lovers. Bordering Arnhem is the spectacular natural landscape of the Hoge Veluwe National Park, home to the Kröller-Müller museum with its world-famous collection of 19th and 20th century art, including the largest privately owned collection of Vincent van Gogh works in the world.
