5 unique places to stay in Breda
De Distel
There are few accommodations more perfectly designed for snuggling up than a traditional Mongolian ger. De Distel, located in the countryside on the outskirts of Breda, is made of all-natural materials, including wood and wool felt, with a wood-burning stove that adds to the warm and inviting atmosphere. It is nestled on a private plot of more than 2.5 hectares of forest and meadow, with a sprawling garden where you can pick fresh fruits and vegetables. During your stay, you can also sign up for one of the creative workshops led by the hosts, including painting, soapstone sculpting, cooking with edible flowers and woodworking.
Hotel Nassau Breda
In the 1400s, three courthouses were built along Nieuwstraat as residences for noblemen. In the 1800s, these estates were taken over by the Order of Franciscan Sisters and renamed Liefdegesticht, the Asylum of Love. The sisters added a neo-Gothic chapel and created passageways between the convent buildings, linking the monuments together in a complex. Today, it has been reimagined as Hotel Nassau Breda, a high-end boutique hotel that brings the city’s intriguing past to life in thoughtfully renovated rooms that pay cheeky homage to the buildings’ history.
Het Scheepshuys
Het Scheepshuys, which means ‘the ship house’, was built in 1927 as a wedding gift from Reinier Jansen, the city’s preeminent fruit exporter, to his son Guus. It is rumored that it was an arranged marriage to a Swiss debutante but that Guus’s heart belonged to a local Dutch girl whose family worked in the shipping industry. The stylish villa was adorned with a large copper ship, in what was thought to be a love note to Guus’s forbidden flame. This estate has been turned into a cozy boutique hotel where guests can enjoy a homely atmosphere in a storied setting that’s a beautiful balance of old and new.
Birdie Villas
A luxury escape in Bergvliet, a vacation park that’s loaded with facilities, Birdie Villas offers a spacious home-away-from-home atmosphere. It is a well-appointed 90-square-meter two-bedroom, two-bathroom villa with a partly covered terrace that’s outfitted with a large outdoor table and fireplace, so you can sunbathe in the summer or lounge by a crackling yule log in the winter. The park is just a 10-minute drive from Breda, surrounded by forests that are great for nature walks and cycling, while the onsite 18-hole golf course, brand-new 4,000-square-meter wellness complex, saunas, swimming pools and whirlpools encourage relaxation and renewal.
Stalen Boshuis
The forest surroundings, trendy interior and double infrared sauna have made the Stalen Boshuis a favorite destination for discerning nature-lovers. This modern two-bedroom holiday home is an eye-pleasing architectural feat made of weathering steel, with a glassed-in living room that floods the space with natural light. Amenities including a gas fireplace, terraces on both sides of the house, a widescreen TV, a kitted-out kitchen and a deep-soaking bathtub make for a high-comfort vacation. As the Stalen Boshuis is also located on the Bergvliet estate, guests will have access to the park’s 18-hole golf course and luxurious spa.
