Leiden market

Leiden boasts one of the best markets in Holland. Every Saturday a great market arises in the city centre. Take your time strolling past the dozens of stalls lined along the canals (Nieuwe Rijn, Vismarkt en Botermarkt). Come with an empty stomach because you will find nothing but excellent fresh produce. Eat a traditional Dutch herring, buy a piece of good Dutch cheese and snack on freshly baked bread and fresh stroopwafels (caramel waffles).

  • Visit one of the best markets in Holland.
  • Try traditional Dutch treats.
  • Enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the many terraces in Leiden.

Terraces near the market

If you are ready for a break, find a table on one of the terraces. The cafes have small terraces on the street side and on the bridge but there are also several terrace barges on the water. Order a cup of coffee, enjoy your moment in the sun and watch the people shopping at the market stalls.

Accessibility

If you are staying in Leiden’s city centre or near the railway station, it is just a small walk to the market. If you plan to come by car, find a parking space in the Morsgarage covered car park (Morsweg 82), on the Garenmarkt or near De Valk windmill (Molenwerf). From here, you can reach the famous Saturday market in about 10 minutes.

There is also a market in Leiden on Wednesday. In addition to the regular market the Aalmarkt also has a farmer’s market with a range of ecological produce. The Wednesday market hours are from 08:00 – 17:00.
