De Doelen building

The Great Hall is not just the biggest hall in De Doelen; it is also the biggest concert hall in Holland. Its architecture and acoustics are widely praised. The Rotterdam music theatre has three other halls as well and draws nearly 500,000 visitors a year.

The name De Doelen is derived from a group of city musicians from the 17th century. The site was put into use as a cultural and entertainment venue in 1844. The theatre was destroyed during the 1940 bombing raids. After the war it was rebuilt; it has since been renovated and extended several times.
