Clingendael Estate

The Clingendael Estate features one of the most beautiful parks in The Hague. Since the sixteenth century, various aristocratic families living there have constructed several gardens. The Japanese garden, open only for six weeks a year, is the most famous.

  • Go for a walk through the many gardens of the Clingendael manor.
  • In spring and fall, visiting the fairytale Japanese garden is a must.
  • Admission to Landgoed Clingendael is free.
Behind Huys Clingendael residence and the old Dutch garden lie a large playground and field where children play, youngsters kick a ball and families enjoy picnics. You can visit the tearoom for a cup of tea or coffee with apple pie or an ice cream.

The Clingendael gardens

Clingendael Estate has several breath-taking gardens. The best known is the national heritage-listed Japanese garden. Narrow paths and small bridges lead you along a carpet of moss interspaced with unique plants, bamboo, resting houses and a surprising pond.

Other gardens on the Clingendael Estate that you should visit are the rose garden, the azalea and rhododendron garden, a traditional Dutch garden with box hedges and flowerbeds and a winding wall surrounded by fruit trees.

Walking through Clingendael Estate

The Clingendael Estate is open all year round and freely accessible. Because of its vulnerability the Japanese garden is only open from the beginning of May until mid-July (09.00 a.m. - 20.00 p.m.) and in the third and fourth week of October (10.00 a.m. - 16.00 p.m.). The main entrance of the estate lies along Wassenaarseweg. Follow the yellow posts for a 4 km-long walk and the red posts for a 2 km-long walk.
