Originally intended as a city palace for Prince Charles of Nassau-Weilburg in the late eighteenth century, The Hague purchased the grand building in 1802 and transformed it into Nieuwe Haagsche Schouwburg, or New Theatre Hague.  The opening of the theater took place in 1804.

Year-Round Performances

Koninklijke Schouwburg is located on the Korte Voorhout in The Hague and offers more than just classical productions. During the year it plays host to numerous exciting events and festivals. Famous dramatic and comedic artists have graced its historic stage, and the award-winning Amsterdam Baroque Opera gives magical seasonal performances. In this delightful setting, musicals, cabaret and dance performances are presented and individuals needing a location for receptions, parties and conferences do so in this prestigious building. Het Paradijs, a more intimate theatre, is located on the top floor and is famous as a breeding-ground for modern theatre, attracting international plays and playwrights.

Modern and Historic Setting

Following extensive renovations to Koninklijke Schouwburg from 1997-1999, the modern theatre complex of today emerged, albeit one still graced by the historic elegance of the eighteenth century. Improvements were made to lighting, ventilation, accessibility, and seating space. Discount tickets are available for most performances, with children under the age of 12 paying a special price. Tickets may be ordered 24/7 through the website.
