Inhabitants of Soestdijk

Soestdijk Palace was built in the seventeenth century as a country house, by the mayor of Amsterdam. King William II ultimately had it converted into a true summer palace.Throughout the centuries, many members of the Royal Family have lived in the palace; from King Willem II and his wife Anna Paulowna in 1815 to Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in 2004. Soestdijk was a place where they received important guests, such as Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill. During the French and German occupations, in 1795 and 1940 respectively, the palace was inhabited by army officers.

Walk through the palace gardens

Not just the palace itself is gorgeous, the gardens are also worth a visit. The landscape garden and its pond, the winding brook and the lawns were all constructed in the early nineteenth century at the order of King Louis Napoleon. From May to October, there are regular guided tours of the palace gardens.
