Tong Tong Fair
The Tong Tong Fair (formerly Pasar Malam Besar) in The Hague is the world’s biggest Eurasian festival. The event is nearly half a century old. Being a cultural festival, tradeshow and food fest all at the same time, it certainly stimulates the senses. The Tong Tong Fair is held in a group of large tents.
Tong Tong Festival
The Tong Tong Fair consists of the Grand Pasar (market), the East-West Fair and the Food Court, Holland’s biggest single group of Asian food stalls. With its broad range of cultural activities, the Tong Tong Festival spans five theatres in The Hague. You can experience a live cooking demonstration at the Cooking Theatre, explore a photo exhibition at the Cultural Pavilion, or enjoy typically Asian snacks at one of the many waroengs.
There are also many workshops to attend, ranging from martial arts to making a kite. In all the fair encompasses nearly two hundred lectures, workshops, movie shows, interviews and cooking demonstrations, as well as more than 250 music, dance and wayang (puppet) performances.
Tents and open-air
All events are held in big tents with timber flooring. The walkways between the tents are also covered and have timber flooring. Between the tents you will find a field, the aloen-aloen. It goes without saying that when the weather is good, the field is used to maximum effect. Food stalls open terraces on the aloen-aloen and there is often a band playing. When the weather is less pleasant, spaces like the theatre and the lounge (where people tend to spend more time) in the entrance tent are heated.
