WWII is a theme throughout all of the historical descriptions of Arnhem. The Battle for Arnhem, which was fought on the banks of the Rhine in September 1944, was part of Operation Market Garden. The bridge at Arnhem was not captured due to a combination of complications. Arnhem proved ‘a bridge to far’. Visiting one of the museums that focus on this dramatic period in WWII is almost a must. The Battle of Arnhem Information Center near the John Frost Bridge uses photos and personal stories to sketch a picture of the civilians and soldiers who lived and fought in Arnhem in September 1944. Or visit Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’ in nearby Oosterbeek. At the Airborne Experience, you’ll almost experience the Battle for Arnhem yourself.
Accessibility and parking in Arnhem
Arnhem is about an hour’ drive away from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and the capital, Amsterdam. You can also get there easily by public transport. If you travel by car, make sure to check where you are allowed to park your car. Arnhem has a parking route. Follow the ‘Centrumring+P’ signs to find a car park.
