A monumental monastery complex, a military hospital, a squatters' building and a five-star hotel: Charles V has seen it all. This extraordinary complex has an infamous history that dates back to the Middle Ages.

A military hospital

Centuries worth of history engulf you in this unique complex. Charles V lived here. In 1808 Louis Napoleon reclaimed it from Germany and turned it into a military hospital. Later still, in 1986, the complex was neglected and occupied by a group of squatters who lived there.

Five-star hotel

In 1998 the complex was converted into a beautiful hotel, which is still called Charles V (Karel V). It was the first five-star hotel in Utrecht and its restaurant was awarded a Michelin star. If staying or dining there is too expensive for you, it is still worth visiting. The inner court is a delightful place, and is still open to the public.
