With three popular locations in the capital, Burgermeester in Amsterdam is probably the best-known burger place in Holland. They serve honest, simple food. Everything is home-made using local produce wherever possible. Their burgers are excellent: crisp Italian buns with creamy mayonnaise, tender meat from Blonde d’Aquitane cattle, vegetables with a bite. The menu also features alternative burgers, such as duck with sauerkraut, Texel lamb or goat cheese burgers for vegetarians. If you can’t choose (and that’s not just the women, says Burgermeester!) you can order a mini trio. The brave go for the monthly special, which is based on creative suggestions submitted by guests.

Another successful burger concept is the Burger Bar in Amsterdam. Guests can create their own burger by picking a type of meat (Irish, Black Angus or Wagyu), the patty size, the bun and toppings like bacon and avocado. Burgerz in Delft and The Hague serves funky burgers in an American-style diner. Recently opened Meneer Smakers in Utrecht focuses mainly on sustainability and offers burgers with original names like Oom Jimmie (Scottish salmon with capers and wakame) and Opa Harry (lamb burger with beets, bean sprouts and honey mustard).

The Butcher in Amsterdam serves top-quality, ‘bloody delicious’ hamburgers and is loved for its stylish interior and urban vibe. The trendy bar can be found on the famous Albert Cuypmarkt in Amsterdam, slap bang in the middle of the hip Pijp district. The Butcher has a tough, cool style with white wall tiling, an open kitchen and a butcher’s shop window filled with meat. It’s good to know they are open from 11 am to long after midnight. There is also a secret cocktail bar in the back, but you first need to find out about the password. How? That’s the secret!
