De Uithof is a district of Utrecht, where Utrecht University, the University Medical Centre (UMC), the University of Applied Science Utrecht and several student facilities are located. The establishment of a seminary in the 7th century became the foundation for Utrecht University. In the centuries that followed, it expanded to become one of the largest knowledge institutes in Holland, currently boasting nearly 30,000 science and arts students. In the centuries that followed, it expanded to become one of the largest knowledge institutes in Holland, currently boasting nearly 30,000 science and arts students. Unique for De Uithof is the striking architecture of the numerous buildings.

Architecture at De Uithof

Drive through De Uithof and a number of buildings will catch your eye. The most striking architecture belongs to the University Library, designed by Wiel Arets. With more than 4.2 million books and 1000 study places, the Library is full of unprecedented spatial effects. In 2005, the architect won the Rietveld Prize for his design.

Other examples of striking architecture at De Uithof:

  • The Thermal Power Plant is a sustainable design by Liesbeth van der Pol, conspicuous for its orangish-red colour and six chimneys.
  • The Minnaert building, the product of Willem Jan Neutelings, was completed in 2002 and features striking shapes and incidence of light plus unique energy system.
  • The Marinus Ruppert Building was designed by Sjoerd Wouda and completed in 1963. Particularly striking features are the spatial hall, the modernist style and the unique colours.
  • The A.A. Hijmans van den Bergh Building of architect Erick van Egeraat was awarded the 2007 Rietveld Prize. You will recognise the façade composed of vertical strips of aluminium, glass and stone. Inside, three glass cones guide light into the inner recesses of the building.
  • The Basket is a trendy café with a basketball court on top. Its designers, NL Architects, were awarded the 2003 Rietveld Prize and the prize of the Dutch Architecture Institute for young architects.
  • The Cambridgelaan student flats were completed by Rudy Uytenhaak Architectenbureau in 1999. A total of 1002 flats are distributed over a combination of high-rise and low-rise apartments.
  • The Educatorium is the central education building of architect Rem Koolhaas. The Educatorium also won prizes for the special design of the lecture halls, examination facilities and the restaurant.

Visit De Uithof in Utrecht

You can visit De Uithof every day of the week. At the central train station (Centraal Station), take bus 11 or 12 and you will arrive in the university quarter of Utrecht within 15 minutes.
