What to do in Rotterdam

Due to the heavy bombardments in WWII, Rotterdam now looks completely different from other Dutch cities. It no longer has a historic inner city although it does boast buildings in several special styles. Famous architectural highlights are the Erasmus Bridge, Van Nelle factory, Cube houses, Euromast, and Kop van Zuid.

There is plenty to do in Rotterdam for art lovers. The best known interesting places are the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Kunsthal, and NAi. The maritime background is clearly visible in most of the city’ attractions, such as the Maritime Museum, De Delft shipyard, and SS Rotterdam, which used to be one of the Holland America Line’s flagships. You can even visit the international port of Rotterdam with a harbour tour organized by Spido or take a Splashtour. If you are visiting Rotterdam with your children, Diergaarde Blijdorp, one of Europe’s most beautiful zoos, is an absolute must.

Nightlife in Rotterdam

After a day filled with culture, architecture and shopping, you are ready to experience some Rotterdam cuisine. The city has plenty to offer, from simple snacks to unique Michelin star restaurants. A variety of spices and flavors can be found on the Witte de Withstraat, Westelijk Handelsterrein, and Veerhaven. Hotel New York offers a fantastic view of the Meuse river during your meal. The cafés around the Oude Haven or old harbour are great for a drink and a snack. The city also boasts a number of trendy clubs if you feel like dancing the night away .

Rotterdam is about an hour by car from the capital of Amsterdam and about 45 minutes from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. If you travel by car, make sure to check where you are allowed to park your car.
