The Hague Hofjes Itinerary
With its many beautiful, authentic ‘hofjes’ or courtyards, The Hague definitely deserves its nickname ‘hofstad’. It means ‘court city’, which is appropriate in more ways than one. While these ‘hofjes’ or courtyards are now special, peaceful oases in the inner city, more than 25% of the city’s residents lived in one of its more than 115 courtyards just one century ago.

The ‘hofjes’ (actually an old word for ‘gardens’) are hidden places, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In the past the elderly and poor lived here but today the situation has changed.
Where can you find them?
If you stroll through the city centre you will encounter many courtyards. The Rusthofje is located behind the Lange Voorhout. The Lange Beestenmarkt hides the Hof van Wouw and the entrance to the Hof van Nieuwkoop is on the Prinsengracht. Schuddegeest and Mallemolen are located in the Archipelbuurt.
