City of culture

Discover the artistic side of the city during one of the many cultural festivals, embracing a variety of genres from religious and secular music, opera, modern dance and theatre, to design, pop and modern youth culture. Maastricht encourages creativity; from talented amateur artists to top-level stars. The visual arts can be enjoyed year-round at the Bonnefanten Museum. And 10 days a year, connoisseurs gather to focus on the world’s leading art and antiques fair: The European Fine Art Fair, TEFAF.
Bonnefanten Museum
The museum on the banks of the river Maas is housed in a landmark modernist building with a striking dome, designed by Aldo Rossi. It has an impressive collection of old masters as well as contemporary art from around the world.
National History Museum
Come face-to-face with some of Maastricht's oldest residents in startling displays featuring the remains of a Mosasaurier excavated from the St. Pietersberg caverns.
Treasure St. Servatius Basilica
Very imposing on the outside, on the inside this Basilica is a heady mix of tradition, history, religious culture and architecture. It’s in this Basilica that Maastricht cherishes its greatest treasures.
