Renting a bike

Cycling in Holland

At the bicycle depots of some 100 train stations and other rent companies the rental bikes, standard or with several speeds, are ready and waiting. You can often also rent tandems, mountain bikes, children's bikes and child seats. In a flat country like Holland, gears are not a necessary requirement.

Rental companies

Most bicycle rent companies will ask for a deposit, which can vary from EUR 25 to EUR 90. Please don't forget to bring proof of identity. Many bicycles and repair shops will also rent bicycles. We advise you to reserve your bicycle in advance but it is not necessary. Local tourist information offices (VVV) will supply you with a listing of local rental companies.

Prices

The price depends on the quality of the bicycle and/or whether that particular region is in 'high demand'. In order to give you some idea:

- An ordinary bicycle and children's bikes will cost you approximately EUR 7 per day or EUR 30 per week.
- The price of a two seated bicycle is approximately EUR 16 per day or EUR 70 per week.
- Baby seats can be rented for approximately EUR 4 per day or EUR 10 per week.
Rented bicycles must be returned to the original point of rent.

Check your bike

Be sure to check the bike before you ride away. Are the wheels properly inflated? Is the seatthe right height for you? How do the gears work? A thorough inspection and a few instructions can prevent any unpleasant surprises. Note that the type mostly on offer is the typical Dutch upright single-speed hub-brake bike, but rental of other types as MTB or tandem is becoming increasingly popular.
