Arnhem and surroundings

Arnhem is situated in the East of Holland and offers numerous activities for young and old. Its many woods, heaths, parks and rivers make it a popular cycle and walking area. The city of Arnhem has some interesting museums and is well known for its many shops and restaurants.

Arnhem’s city centre has many stunning monuments, churches and squares to visit. If history isn’t quite your thing perhaps shopping is. Arnhem is the fifth largest shopping city in Holland and a huge variety of shops line the main streets and ancient alleyways.

 

For food, head straight for the entertainment district the Korenmarkt. Here you’ll find a feast of restaurants. Evening entertainment is plentiful. From theatre to music, take a quick glance at the local listings and you’ll be spoilt for choice.

 

Attractions
Arnhem and surroundings is rich in culture and attractions and there are numerous museums, art galleries and activities to choose from.

 

The world famous Krölller Müller Museum is located within the Hoge Veluwe National Park and only a short drive from Arnhem. It’s well worth a visit with its fantastic collection of van Gogh paintings and superb sculpture garden.

 

The well-known Burgers' Zoo has a tropical rainforest, jungle, desert, safari park and ocean – plus over 3,000 animals! In the safari park a 250-metre-long walking bridge gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful panorama from a beautiful vantage point.

 

Also pay a visit to the Netherlands Open Air Museum and experience how people lived over the last four hundred years. From an historic paper-mill to a 1950’s health centre, history really comes alive here.

 

The Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, keeps alive the memory of the Battle of Arnhem. The battle was part of Operation Market Garden and aimed to liberate Western Europe. In 2004 Arnhem commemorated 60 years of Operation Market Garden.

 

Find out more about African art and culture and pay a visit to the Africa Open Air Museum. The museum has numerous authentic copies of Arfrican art, implements and residential areas. It’s truly a living museum, with many inspiring presentations.

 

In the Biblical Museum you’ll find out more about the origins, traditions and background of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In the indoor museum presentations show the history of the Bible and the Koran while outside you can visit recreations of villages and houses of the historic times.

 

Outdoor life
National Parks are plentiful with the Veluwezoom and Hoge Veluwe located very close by. As you make your way along the many cycle, foot and bridle paths don’t be surprised if you stumble across the odd red deer. The heathlands and pinewoods of the Veluwe Zoom are great for bird watching and the dunes and forests of the Geldersepoort offer excellent cycle paths.
