Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
After leaving the Post CS-building on 01.10.08, the museum is organising exhibitions, projects, workshops and other activities throughout Amsterdam. Stedelijk Goes to Town is a count-down to the grand re-opening on the Museumplein. What’s on the programme? For the rest of 2008 and 2009 items from the Stedelijk’s superb collection will be on show in major exhibitions elsewhere in Amsterdam.
At the same time, the Stedelijk will be taking contemporary art plus interactive and other projects to unexpected venues in and around the city. Whether you’re an art connoisseur or a complete novice, familiar with the Stedelijk or not, Stedelijk Goes to Town is your best chance ever to experience art, say what you think, find out everything you always wanted to know and take part in workshops.
The Construction Cabin on Tour
3 October 2008 – December 2009
The Stedelijk’s artistic version of a construction cabin is touring the city from the Oosterdokseiland to the Museumplein, passing via Noord, Centrum, IJburg, Slotervaart, Zuid-Oost, Oost, Westerpark and De Baarsjes. Designed by Niels van Eijk and Miriam van der Lubbe, the Construction Cabin is a temporary nerve-centre for experiments, workshops, performances, talks, walks, discussions, debates and artist surgeries. Drop in for a free cup of coffee and to meet local residents, artists and museum staff!

Van Gogh Museum

This exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum focuses on two sets of artists who owed a clear debt to Vincent van Gogh: the French Fauvists and the German Expressionists. Van Gogh’s influence is particularly apparent in their use of colour and spontaneous handling of paint. The exhibition will include, for example, work by Matisse, De Vlaminck and Kirchner.
Holy Inspiration – Religion and spirituality in modern art

Religion and spirituality are once again hot topics. This exhibition responds to this renewed public interest. Top works from the Stedelijk’s collection reveal the diversity in artists’ religious experience. Holy Inspiration includes work by great artists like Chagall, Mondrian, Malevich, Klee, Kandinsky, Pollock, Bacon, Gilbert & George, Koons, Warhol, Beuys, Kounellis, Kiefer and Dumas. Avant-gardes ’20 / ’60 – Highlights from the Stedelijk Museum collection
Van Gogh Museum

A major overview of the avant-garde movements of the 1920s and the 1960s – turbulent decades which saw huge changes in art. In the 1920s, it was late Cubism, Surrealism, the Bauhaus, De Stijl and Russian Constructivism that caused a stir. Forty years on, it was the emergence of Pop Art, Minimalism and Conceptual Art. In post-war Amsterdam, many American artists staged their first European exhibitions at the Stedelijk. Key names in this show will include Mondrian, Picasso, Malevich, Schwitters, Warhol, Andre and Nauman.

Fencing the Museum
June 2008 – September 2009
In this recurrent happening, seven young artists completely transform the fences surrounding the Stedelijk Museum construction site every two months. They wallpaper the 108 metres of hoarding with work in the form of A0-size posters, taking the museum’s past publicity materials as their starting point. The project is intended to explore the dividing line between art and publicity. In collaboration with the Gerrit Rietveld Academy’s Research Group on Art and Public Space.
Visibly Absent
January – September 2009
The top works in the Stedelijk’s permanent collection have been away and out of sight for some time now. Hence Visibly Absent, a project organised by the Stedelijk Museum in collaboration with the Rietveld Academy and the Sandberg Institute to explore ways in which a collection can be out of sight and yet a visible and occasionally surprisingly tangible presence in the city.
In West
18 April – Augustus 2009
In this project, the Stedelijk will present new work by renowned international artists at locations in Amsterdam’s ‘garden city’ New West area. The artists have been invited to devise special projects in response to this specific context. This may mean that a new work emerges from a dialogue between the artist and local residents or that the artist creates a work in response to the social or physical environment of areas of New West like Slotervaart or Bos en Lommer.
Municipal Art Acquisitions 2009: photography

In 2009, the annual Municipal Art Acquisitions exhibition is to be held on location at the RAI during Art Amsterdam. It will be devoted to photography. Guest curator is Dutch photographer and publicist Hans Aarsman. He will devise a theme for the show and a call will go out for artists to submit entries relevant to it. The works to be acquired will be selected by the Stedelijk Museum during the art fair and the exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue.

Eye-Openers
From September 2008, ongoing
Eye-openers are young Amsterdam residents, aged between 15 and 19, who do a special job at the Stedelijk Museum: they organise activities, guided tours and events for people of their own age and act as consultants to the museum in this respect. Dropstuff
November 2008
Museum hangout, mobile billboard and e-culture hotspot, Dropstuff is currently touring the whole country and will be in Amsterdam in November. Artists make works especially for Dropstuff on the subject of ‘the limits of free speech’ and the whole thing is designed to be interactive. The Stedelijk is cooperating with Dropstuff on workshops for secondary school kids.
