14 February 2015
Valentine’s Day: it’s the day of love. As early as AD 496, Pope Gelasius decided that 14 February was the day dedicated to the sainted Valentine. Since that time it has been a special day on which people show their loved one how much he or she means to them.
Sober Dutch folk
Until recently there was a tradition of expressing your love anonymously through a card or flowers. But these days, we celebrate love in general on Valentine’s Day. The Dutch are a sober folk and tend to keep it simple with a card, some flowers or a small present.
And of course it’s a good day to treat your sweetheart to a really nice dinner. Many restaurants serve special Valentine menus. Make sure you book a table well in advance if you want to have a romantic dinner in Holland on Valentine’s Day.
