Kunsthal Rotterdam presents Sweet & Salt; an exhibition about the relationship between the Dutch and water. Sweet & Salt is a diverse collection of 120 works of art in which historical masterpieces are coupled with modern and contemporary art. The art collection gives a broad impression of the Dutch water landscape and the role art played in shaping our perception of water.

Water and the Dutch

Sweet & Salt of the Kunsthal Rotterdam provides an overview of several Dutch water panoramas. Dutch polder landscapes, images of the North Sea flood, and the construction of the Afsluitdijk - a causeway between the provinces of North Holland and Friesland. Moreover, water recreation and techniques for safety and flood management alternate in the different pieces of art. The themes of war, alliance, gain, amusement and myth are all covered.
The artworks of Sweet & Salt include classics such as Willem Maris and Salomon van Ruysdael, and works by Theo van Doesburg, Edgar Fernhout, Marijke van Warmerdam and the photographer Han Singels.
