Utrecht is a city of beautiful canals, bustling shopping streets and plenty of cultural highlights – and a wonderful place to visit in summer. Situated in Holland’s ‘green heart’, it has everything for a great holiday.
- Discover Utrecht’s archaeological layers in Domunder.
- Enjoy a music show at TivoliVredenburg.
- Visit the 400-year-old textile market on Saturday morning.
Utrecht’s three highlights this summer are:
1. Discover Domunder
Beneath Domplein square in Utrecht lies Domunder with its unique archaeological digs. Descend into the earth as an archaeologist and discover 2000 years of history in the different time layers hidden here. From 45 Ad when the Romans built the Castellum Trajectum up to the Gothic cathedral that was destroyed in 1674. An extraordinary experience.
2. Visit TivoliVredenburg
This new music centre opened its doors in the spring of 2014 and is the biggest of its kind in Holland. It boasts five big concert halls for different music genres, from classical to jazz and from pop to cross-over. It has a great grand café and a bustling jazz club and also hosts interesting workshops.
3. Market shopping
Going for an unhurried market stroll is one of the most enjoyable holiday activities. Utrecht has a wonderful flower market on the Oudegracht on Saturday for those who love gardening. The Breedstraat and Begijnhof host the biggest and oldest (400 years) textile market in Holland on Saturday morning. And the regional market on the Twijnstraat every first Sunday of the month presents the best regional dishes and produce every time.
Regional market: From April, every 1st Sunday of the month on Twijnstraat
Flower market: Saturday on Oudegracht and Janskerkhof
Lapjesmarkt textile market: Saturday morning from 8:00 to 13:00 on Breedstraat and Begijnhof.
