Dreams of Nature

24th February - 17th June 2012
Amsterdam

The Van Gogh Museum is currently presenting the temporary exhibition Dreams of Nature. Symbolism is central to this exhibition and you can admire works varying from Van Gogh to Kandinsky. Approximately 70 works provide poetic and evocative images of nature. It is a different way of experiencing the nature, but no less fascinating.

Symbolism in the Van Gogh Museum

Symbolism was a leading movement in painting in the late 19th century. It emerged from philosophy and poetry and was closely connected to music. Artists wanted to create visions and dreams as opposed to visible reality, as a reaction to the growing industrialization and the materialism of Europe. Their works reflected feelings of fear and pessimism, but also a desire for spirituality and mythology.

Nature and culture

The exhibition Dreams of Nature of the Van Gogh Museum presents paintings of Böcklin, Whistler, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Monet, Gauguin and Munch. Besides the temporary exhibition on symbolism, you can of course also visit the permanent exhibition of Van Gogh. This is how nature and culture go hand in hand in the Van Gogh Museum.
