Accommodations that specifically target or exclusively cater to gays and lesbians may be preferred for either their proximity to the gay scene or their knowledge of what's hot and new, and who goes where. Where you end up staying depends on how gay-identified you are and what amenities you're looking for.

Hotel Orfeo (Leidsekruisstraat 14, Tel.: +31 20-623 1347) is a very popular, exclusively gay hotel. There are also a few self-catering apartments available.

Hotel New York (Herengracht 13, Tel.: +31 20-624 3066) is quiet, stylish and charming, located near the central railway station and along one of Amsterdam's prettiest canals. The hotel is also minutes from the Homo monument and just outside the red-light district.

The Quentin (Leidsekade 89, Tel.: +31 20-626 2187) is central to theaters and shopping on the Leidseplein square.

The ITC (Prinsengracht 1051, Tel.: +31 20-623 0203) is in between two popular gay areas, Rembrandtplein and the Kerkstraat.

Centre Apartments (Heintje Hoeksteeg 27, Tel.: +31 20-627 2503) offers both full apartments and studios, right next door to the central railway station. Historic Dam Square is a short stroll away, as are many of the best shopping districts. Amsterdam's renowned gay area, Warmoestraat, is also within easy reach.

The Waterfront (Singel 458, Tel.: +31 20-421 6621) is popular for its big windows overlooking the Singel canal and its typical Dutch architecture.

The Golden Bear (formerly the Hotel Unique, Kerkstraat 37, Tel.: +31 20 627 0164) was the first hotel in Amsterdam to cater exclusively to gay men and women.

Hotel Greenwich Village (Kerkstraat 25, Tel.: +31 20-626 9746) is a hotel distinguished for its Old World charm and typical Dutch architecture.

The Prinsen Hotel (Vondelstraat 36-38, Tel.: +31 20 616 2323) is located on the edge of Amsterdam's beautiful Vondelpark.

The Black Tulip (Geldersekade 16, Tel.: +31 20-427 0933) resides in the 'leather gay area'.
