Van Gogh’s cultural heritage

Dec. 7, 2022

NBTC, Van Gogh Brabant, Marketing Drenthe and VisitBrabant are intensifying their collaboration in a multi-year partnership to reconnect the life story and heritage of Vincent van Gogh with rural sites, to develop the assets sustainably and strengthen the visibility. On 7 November at Het Noordbrabants Museum, the parties endorsed their joint intentions in the presence of the deputies of Drenthe and North Brabant.

Vincent van Gogh is world-famous and his cultural heritage attracts many visitors to our country. Given the spread of Van Gogh sites in the Netherlands, the parties see a good opportunity to connect Van Gogh's heritage in addition to the well-known top museums. This way, the partners aim to enticeartlovers of today and tomorrow from home and abroad to visit new destinations.

By linking Van Gogh's cultural offer in Brabant and Drenthe with the landscapes from which he drew his inspiration, the partners aim to develop new sustainable and small-scale tourist offerslinked to nature. Besides strengthening and developing the offer, the partners will invest in demand management, data and knowledge exchange.

Under the banner of Van Gogh Europe, the destination management organizations NBTC, VisitBrabant, Marketing Drenthe (representing Van Gogh Drenthe) and Van Gogh Brabant will intensify their collaboration from 2023 towards the year 2028. This is the year when the 175th anniversary of Vincent van Gogh's birth will be celebrated nationally and internationally.

The year 2023 will commemorate Van Gogh's arrival in Drenthe 140 years ago and his settlement in Nuenen in the same year. In May, the reopening of the large-scale renovation of Museum Vincentre will be celebrated, around summer the renovated Van Gogh House in Nieuw Amsterdam, in autumn the renovated Van GoghHuis in Zundert and the Van Gogh exhibition in the Drents Museum. Besides a wide range of activities in Drenthe and Brabant, 2023 is also the year when the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam celebrates 50 years and the Van Gogh Europe partners celebrate 170 years of Van Gogh.

Joining forces is part of NBTC's strategy to spread visitors to and in the Netherlands. A collective approach that calls for a multi-year strategic agenda. In 2023, the organizations will start jointly communicating the offer and developing a multi-year approach on destination development, data and demand management.
